MPLS: Unicast IP Forwarding

With unicast IP forwarding, MPLS forwarding logic forwards packets based on labels. When choosing the interface to forward packets out, MPLS only considers routes in the unicast IP routing table resulting in MPLS packet flows going over the same path as if MPLS were not used.

MPLS unicast forwarding does not provide any real advantages by itself, however other MPLS applications such as VPNs and MPLS-TE use MPLS unicast IP forwarding.

MPLS requires control plane protocols like OSPF or LDP to learn labels, bind thos labels to a destination prefix and build forwarding tables for the labels.
