MPLS: Foundation

MPLS defines new protocols that change the way routers forward packets.  Instead of relying on the destination IP, MPLS defines how routers forward packets based on an MPLS label.

By removing the forwarding decision from the destination IP, MPLS allows decisions to be based on other things such as traffic engineering and QoS while still using traditional information learned using routing protocols.
