With faster than 1Gbps interfaces being introduced in today’s networks, EIGRP has some problems with determining the metrics for interfaces of these speeds.
- Bandwidth is unable to differentiate between 10Gbps and faster interfaces
- Delay is already set to the lowest value of 1 on 1Gbps interfaces and cannot be made smaller on faster interfaces.
These are just a few reasons EIGRP developers were prompted to update EIGRP to properly account for faster interfaces in todays networks.
These metrics are referred to as Wide Metrics.
Wide metrics are supported on any 8.0 or higher revision of EIGRP
