IP SLA

The Cisco IP SLA feature provides a means of actively probing the network to collect performance information from it.  IP SLA is based on generating traffic at a specified interval with specifically configured options and measuring the results of it’s transport across a network.  It’s built using a source-responder model, where one device acts as the source and sends out the probes, and the terminating device simply listens to and responds to those probes.

Here are the values measured by IP SLA:

  • Delay
  • Jitter
  • Packet Loss
  • Packet Sequencing
  • Path
  • Connectivity
  • Server or Website Download time
  • Voice Quality Metrics
